Wessex Ridgeway Provisional results

Well the weather proved to be different this year from most of the previous years. Blazing hot sunshine instead of lashing rain and gale force winds. It was fine for the marshals but the heat made it hard for the runners.

Marlborough 'A' team managed to pull out a lead that steadily increased through the day. Meanwhile Wimborne 'A' and the Dorset Doddlers 'A' remained in close company for the most of the day, and the final position was resolved on the last leg with the Doddlers pulling in front to come second.

There were three all ladies teams and the Doddlers pulled away from early on the have a convincing victory over Wimborne ladies.

Special mention should be made of the teams from more distant places than this area of the south-west. Long Suffering Friends have supported the race for several years and have provided most of the photos used on the course notes. This year they entered two teams. Finch Coasters also entered two teams, and a team called 'Not From Round Here' was also running. It was great to see you all.

The race started at 7:32:00 by the official watch. Ines however started at 3:10 a.m.

The weather was blazing hot and as a result Ines retired on leg 10. Given the conditions it was an amazing effort to get even that far.

Finch Coasters B also retired after visiting more of Dorset than planned.

Ted Townsend has been digging in his archives and the time to beat for a 6 man team was set by Bournemouth in 2000 with a time of 8:08:59. A four man from Royal Navy & Egdon clocked 7:41:00 in 1997
